Welcome to my blog. I will post whatever I am working on, whether it be a creative writing piece, random blip that has made my day, or an opinion I would like to share with the world. I hope that you enjoy reading as much as I enjoy writing!

I started this years ago, and am seeing if I want to make it into an author's blog.

Remember, today is not simply something to get through, but something to treasure. So smile and enjoy it!!!

The Platinum Rule

In have a Cardinal Rule in my Classroom I live by, and hold my students to:

The Platinum Rule
Treat others better than you want to be treated.

The Golden Rule is fine and dandy, but I always felt that treating others the WAY you wanted to be treated might have ulterior motives.  Like, "I'll help you with this, so you will help me later with that."

Maybe that is just the way I have always interpreted it, but that's how I read it.  "I'll treat you well when it is convenient to me and will serve me best."

I understand the point behind the philosophy, which is why I came up with the Platinum Rule. First, a little chemistry... While Platinum and Gold are only one proton away from one another, they are very different (78 to 79 respectively).  Platinum is worth more than gold.  It is stronger. It is more dense. It is overall (in my opinion), better.

Therefore, the Platinum Rule is to treat others better than you want to be treated.  What does that look like?  Doing the right thing for the right reasons.  Helping people and the situation because you should, and not expecting anything in return.  I realize how tall of an order that is, but think about how the world would be different if more people lived that way?  "I will help you because I CAN."  Philanthropy for the sake of it.  Food for thought.

Love Life

You never fully appreciate something until you lose it.  It is almost impossible to see the true value of everything until we live without it.  Honestly, how many of you are grateful that you can climb a flight of stairs?  How about that you can listen to the radio?  Drive a car?  Watch the snow fall?  Talk to your parents?  Flip a light switch on when it gets dark?  Turn on the hot water in the shower every day?

There is also a difference between acknowledging that you have more luxuries in life than someone else, and truly appreciating their value.  How would you feel if you woke up one day and could no longer walk up a flight of stairs?  If you could not walk, then you would see how wonderful the gift you had was, but all too late.

We should value what we have in life today, and not dwell on what we lack.  Tomorrow will take enough from us; we should treasure what we have today, while we still have it.  Live, laugh, and love life!

Who Has Inspired You?

Some people who walk into our lives touch them in ways that change our life forever.  Whether it is someone we grew up with, were taught by, worked with, were raised by, or knew in passing, it is not always easy to tell the ones who will leave footprints in our hearts.  But when you find someone who changes your life in a positive way, it is nice to be thankful for the good fortune that led to your paths becoming intertwined.

There are a few people who have done wonders for me.  I'd like to give a few of them an anonymous appraisal right now (unless you know me personally, in which case you know who I am talking about; I praise these people a great deal, as I should):

My family - I'm wrapping them all together, because although they have been by my side through thick and thin, it is not extremely out there to be inspired by your family.  For better or worse, they usually have a huge hand in making you the way that you are (either by positive reinforcement, or learning how not to be).  My family has done so much for me, has been extremely supportive, and has never given up on me.

"Ma" - A women with a huge heart.  She was always very involved in the community, and the youth in general.  She loved so many as her own children, which is how she earned the name "Ma."  She was a wonder.  Beautiful (inside and out), strong, positive, and loving.  She battled some terrible things (one of which eventually claimed her life all too soon), and I never once heard the woman complain about anything.  When I hit a rough spot in my life, she took me under her wing, and for that I can never say enough positive things about.  She was a generous soul, and is sorely missed be so many.  Ma helped to make me a better person.  I do not want to disappoint her in any way, and try to keep a positive outlook.  For every time you complain, you should look on the bright side three times.  Things can always be better, but they can be even worse.

Johnny Depp - Actually...I'm not going to talk about this one too much.  He's done so much for me, both indirectly and directly.  He's one of my heroes...as are everyone on this list.

My high school science teacher - I owe him so much.  That is not even the tip of the iceberg.  We all have had a teacher who inspired us, but that does not compare at all to what my high school science teacher has done for me.  I say "high school science teacher," because I had him three years in a row.  I had him as a sophomore, and that class inspired me to chose that as a career path.  The following year I was out of school dealing with cancer, and he volunteered to be my science tutor.  The following year, he single-handedly had gotten a more advanced class of the course I had loved as a sophomore, developed and running at school.  That was a huge factor in me getting back to school for my senior year.  I just had to take that class.  And through the year, while I was still dealing with treatments and side-effects, that class kept me coming to school every day (even if it was ONLY for that class).  Aside from me crediting that as helping me get better (which is enough in and of itself), he has been a mentor to me since sophomore year.  When I needed to talk about something, he was there.  He has time and time again gone above and beyond the call of duty of a teacher, and has bent over backwards to help me.  I owe him more than I can ever repay him.  He is the reason I am on my way to becoming a teacher of that subject today.  He's the best teacher I have ever seen. End of story.

Who has inspired you?  Have you told any of them what they mean to you?

"You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person."

Johnny Depp Grants a Make-A-Wish

By Katherine Vandrilla

"The Make-A-Wish Foundation gives children facing live-threatening illnesses the one thing they want most. Never did I expect to be on the receiving end of this immense generosity.

As a teenager I was diagnosed with leukemia, a blood cancer, and was told that I qualified for a wish. I knew instantaneously what I’d choose: to meet Johnny Depp. If you know one thing about me, it’s that Johnny Depp is a huge part of my life. I discovered him at the age of 12, and have never looked back.

In the beginning, he was my favorite actor and the reason for my dream of acting. When I got sick, he became so much more than that. He gave me something to look forward to. I had to meet the man who had brought so much joy to my life.

Mid-September of 2011, after four years, my family told me that Make-A-Wish had called and we were being sent to London to meet the man of my dreams. Within a few hours my parents, brother and I were half across the world.

The whole experience was surreal. A limo picked us up at our hotel and we were taken to Pinewood Studios where Johnny was filming Dark Shadows, a movie based on the TV show of the same name. In the film he plays Barnabas Collins, a man who was cursed by a witch to spend eternity as a vampire. He was then buried for 200 years until he is accidentally unearthed in the year 1972.

At the studio we were shown props from the movie by the man who created them—and someone whose work I’ve admired—David Balfour. We also had the opportunity to watch them filming next door via a monitor. Then came the big moment. The moment I had been waiting for eight years. It was time to meet Johnny. But it wasn’t only him; Tim Burton, the director of the film and my favorite one at that, was also with him.

No words could ever describe how meeting them felt. To be in the same room as the man of my dreams was unbelievable. It was magical and utterly perfect—much more than I had ever dreamed it would be. There were a couple other Make-A-Wish children, and we were able to speak with Johnny and Tim for a while. We also had some one-on-one time with each of them.

I have never been as happy as I was on that day. I spoke with Johnny about acting, and told him how much he has meant to me. It is an experience I will never forget, and has given me precious memories for a lifetime.

After the day of my wish, my family had a few days to explore the City of London, with just enough time for me to fall helplessly in love with it. The foundation also sent us to Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, as well as took care of all of our expenses.

After our walk among the stars, it was time to return to real life. I can never say enough good things about the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Johnny Depp, Tim Burton, or Dark Shadows. It was the happiest week of my life, and I am so glad my family was able to share it with me.

Dark Shadows comes to DVD on Oct. 2. For more information on the Make-A-Wish Foundation, visit http://www.wish.org/."

Change Someone's Life Today

The smallest gesture can make someone’s day, or may even change that person’s life.

Be nice and friendly so someone you never talk to, or hold the door open for the person behind you.

One act of kindness can spread like wild fire, lighten the mood of your neighborhood, and come back to you in unexpected ways.  You never know until you try!

Thankfulness Journal

In this day and age, everyone is always complaining about something.  Do not get me wrong.  Life is not all lemon drops and gumdrops, I just think we should focus more on the things that are going right, rather than those that are going badly.

Even if you cannot see it right away, everyone has something to be thankful for.  When you are thankful for the blessings in your life, you begin to appreciate everything more.

I suggest that you (even if you love life), try keeping a Thankfulness Journal.  Every day, write down at least one thing you are thankful for.  It may be difficult to begin, and it is perfectly normal if your first entries look something like this:

Day 1:  I am so thankful that asshole that cut me off so dangerously on the highway did NOT cause an accident, which could have ended my life all too short in a fiery ball of death.

Day 2:  I am thankful they served something edible in the cafeteria today.

Eventually you will be able to look deeper than that, and see what you are truly appreciative for in life.  Everyone has their good and bad days, but dwelling on the good makes the bad all the more tolerable.

Be thankful for your life, and the people in it.

Dreams Lead Us Down The Right Path

"The worst thing that happens to you may be the best thing for you if you don't let it get the best of you."
-Will Rogers

Sometimes what we truly want in life is what we get in life; it is meant to be.  Other times what we really want in life will lead us down a path that we had never imagined traveling.  That is not the time to dwell on how our expectations are not being met the way we had planned, but to see where our goal will lead us.

Most of the time where you will find yourself is a much better place than you ever could have found on your own.

That is not to say that you should give up on your dreams.  They will always be an enjoyable part of your life if you allow them to be.

Continue shooting for the moon.  If your dreams NEVER seem impossible, chances are that you are thinking too small.

All Talk

They told me to dream on.

          I did.

They told me to move on.

          I wouldn’t.

They told me to forget about it.

          I couldn’t.

They said it wouldn’t last.

          It has.

They said he was a fake.

          He isn’t.

They said I’d never have a chance.

          I do.

They said it would never happen.

          It did.

They were wrong.

What I am Thankful For Today

Not everything goes the way we would like.  We may not get that promotion at work, the grade we were hoping for, or the girl or guy we were madly in love with.  When it seems as if the whole world is against you and your life sucks, it is nice to stop and think about what you do have.  It may not be all of the materialistic possessions you were hoping for by this point in your life, but I know you have something worth being thankful for.

What I am thankful for right now (among many other things I am not even recognizing at the moment):

-My family
-My friends
-10 toes
-10 fingers (all 20 where they belong)
-2 legs that get me where I want to go
-2 arms that hold my dear ones close
-1 brain (which is above average if I do say so myself)
-1 heart to give and receive love (and keep my blood pumping – always a good thing)
-2 eyes with which to see the world
-2 ears with which to hear
-1 nose to smell freshly baked cookies
-1 tongue to taste those cookies
-a full set of my own pearly whites
-a beautiful crop of hair on top of my head
-the correct number of other organs in proper working order

See?  When times look glum, it may just be the little things that are keeping us going (literally).  If you have all of the above, be thankful.  One day you very well may not.  If you are missing any of the above, appreciate all the more the ones you do have.  Instead of what we are lacking in life, we should be focused on what we have.

Do a Good Turn Daily

We have all heard the expression “do a good turn daily.”  The Boy Scouts know what they are talking about.  We cannot only help ourselves, but must give back to others in any way possible.

There are two main groups of people that can be categorized by this saying.  One will not listen to it at all, and the other takes it to heart.

Some people take it overboard.  They try to help EVERYONE.  One day they are soliciting for cancer research, the next they are trying to save the rainforest, and the following day they are trying to save premature baby hippos.  You can’t save EVERYBODY by yourself.  If you focus your energy on one or two charities/causes, then you will get somewhere.  When you spread yourself too thin, no one wins.  It is better to give $1 to one organization, than one penny to a hundred different charities.

Sort out your priorities, find out what matters most to you, and fight for a cause.  Or start your own.

Something to Think About

The first thing many people do after a disagreement with someone, is think of the perfect comebacks they should have said.  “Yeah!  That would have showed him!”

What most people do not realize, is maybe our conscious is getting the better of us.  Perhaps those “zingers” would have made bad things even worse.

No matter the reason for our delay in genius epiphanies, we should think more and talk less.

That is not to say that we should spend all day coming up with mean things to say in case we get ourselves back in the same situation.  Instead, we should do quite the opposite.

If we spent the time thinking of insults and comebacks to think of compliments and praises, we would start finding ourselves in much less predicaments where we need to tell people off in the first place.

The Place I See

The place I see somewhere between a long-gone star and the receptor in my father's brain which interprets the sight as light.  It lives where the rerun of that canceled show still plays.  It is a beautiful place where sickness, suffering, and Death are not welcomed.

The wind is all of the babies' first laughs.  The sun is the warmth of every hug ever given.  Happiness engulfs the hearts of every visitor as is simply existing was as grand as winning the lottery.

Crime, jealousy, and evil are as shunned and ignored as the lepors of long ago.  The tear-stained meadows at dawn sigh as inhabitors find their day's use of them.  Whether is be a picnic for two seasoned with love, or a game of catch riddled with jokes, the grass is simply happy to be there.

We can learn something from this place.  Where a snear is a smile, and a slap is a pat on the back.  Mistakes never happen, and confusion never was.  This place is perfect...but if there is no such thing as perfect, does it really exist?

Losing a Friend

No matter how old you are, losing a friend never gets any easier.  I just lost someone who was so much more than a friend to me.  They loved me unconditionally, something that is rare to find outside of your family.  The beginning is the hardest.  I am still waiting for the emails that she would send me all of the time.  They were the most inspirational and uplifting emails, and would always brighten my day.  If someone means the world to you, make sure that you tell them while you have the chance.
You definitely have to go through a period of denial before you can accept that a person is truly gone.  There are a few other stages that are neither fixed nor guaranteed for everyone who experiences the loss of a loved one, but the eventual stage is acceptance of the loss.  It may take a while and a lot of struggling, but hopefully you will get there.
When you have a great friend, hold on to them.  Don’t let stupid arguments or unimportant issues get in the way of the time you have together.  Forgive and forget.  I know that is something that is so much easier said than done, but it is a skill that needs to be mastered if you are to enjoy life and appreciate the people in it.  If someone is worth loving, you can overlook almost anything.  Meet them all the way and back.  That way when that person is no longer in your life, you will have no regrets.  There will be no, “Oh I SHOULD have.”  “If ONLY I had forgiven them yesterday.”  Seize the day, and live as if today is yesterday, (that way if you had been putting off until tomorrow, today is yesterday’s tomorrow).
Regret nothing, and be reckless with your love and forgiveness.  There are more important things than to be angry all of the time.  And you’ll be surprised at the friendships you’ll find when you allow yourself to be open to them.
I hope you ALL find at least one person who was as awesome as the friend I had.
